Vertex Pharmaceuticals is a global biotechnology company that discovers and develops small-molecule drugs for the treatment of serious diseases. Its key drugs are Kalydeco, Orkambi, Symdeko, and Trikafta/Kaftrio, and Alyftrek for cystic fibrosis, where Vertex therapies remain the standard of care globally. Vertex has diversified its portfolio through Casgevy, a gene-editing therapy for beta thalassemia and sickle-cell disease, and Journavx, a non-opioid pain medication approved for the treatment of moderate-to-severe acute pain in adults. Additionally, Vertex is evaluating small-molecule inhibitors of APOL1-mediated kidney diseases. Vertex is also investigating cell therapies to deliver a potential functional cure for type 1 diabetes.

Citigroup analyst Geoff Meacham has identified Vertex Pharmaceuticals as his top biotechnology pick, maintaining a Buy rating and a $585 price target as the company expands beyond cystic fibrosis through strategic acquisitions. Vertex recently completed its $10 billion acquisition of Crinetics Pharmaceuticals, or $8.8 billion net of acquired cash, adding endocrinology as a new strategic growth pillar. The deal provides immediate revenue through PALSONIFY, an oral daily treatment for acromegaly, with Citi forecasting $700 million in sales by 2030. Vertex also gains atumelnant, which is in mid- and late-stage development for several endocrine disorders. The acquisition strengthens Vertex's diversification across cystic fibrosis, hematology, pain, nephrology and endocrinology.
