AstraZeneca said its breast cancer drug Etcamah failed to meet the primary endpoint of improving progression-free survival in a late-stage clinical trial, sending its U.S.-listed shares down about 3% in after-hours trading. The trial evaluated Etcamah in combination with palbociclib in previously untreated patients with advanced breast cancer. While the combination showed a numerical improvement in progression-free survival, it did not achieve the study’s primary goal, and AstraZeneca said it will provide the full trial results at a later date. The setback comes only a week after the FDA granted accelerated approval for Etcamah to be used alongside certain CDK4/6 inhibitors, a class of targeted cancer drugs. The failed trial could raise questions about the drug’s broader effectiveness in earlier-line treatment, although the company continues to have an approved use for the therapy under the FDA’s accelerated pathway. $AZN
