Satellite television provides the bulk of EchoStar's revenue. The firm serves about 5 million US satellite customers, about 10% of the traditional television market. It also serves 2 million customers under the Sling brand. EchoStar has also amassed an extensive portfolio of spectrum licenses. It acquired Sprint's prepaid business, serving approximately 7 million customers, primarily under the Boost brand. The firm has agreed to sell a portion of its wireless licenses to AT&T and SpaceX, and will rely heavily on the AT&T network to serve customers. EchoStar's legacy businesses provide satellite telecom services and equipment to businesses and consumers, including about 700,000 internet customers.

$ECHO UBS upgraded EchoStar to Buy from Neutral with a price target of $150, up from $127, after resuming coverage of the name. The firm says that after selling 75% to 80% of its spectrum portfolio for $43B, Echostar has pivoted from a wireless operator into an investment company, the analyst tells investors in a research note. The company's expected 2% stake in SpaceX (SPCX) represents $39B in value, or $110 per share, adds UBS. The firm values Echostar's remaining spectrum at $11B based on transaction precedents, Pay TV -plus Hughes at $6B, and Boost at $2B. It sees 65% upside from current share levels.

I think that Boost Mobile with their direct to satellite via starlink and low cost mnvo strategy is going to turn around big time. Add in Ergen's side play of mobile x, the hughesnet restructuring, and boost stores selling starlink equipment, and this company is going to explode to the upside. Watch out for sling, dish tv, or Hughes to be sold for parts. If this starts happening, a buyout will be likely from SpaceX afterwards to pickup the boost subscribers and lean customer support structure.

The U.S. Trustee has asked a bankruptcy court to appoint an examiner to investigate $1.5 billion in transactions between EchoStar and its bankrupt subsidiary Hughes Satellite Systems. The request follows a similar petition from bondholders, who allege that EchoStar stripped Hughes of more than $1.5 billion in assets over the past two years through self-dealing transactions. Bondholders claim Hughes entered into a noncompetitive lease for the Jupiter 3 satellite with an EchoStar affiliate in December 2023, paid more than $1 billion in dividends to EchoStar in Q1 2024, and reimbursed the parent company $196 million for taxes, about 15 times the amount paid in prior years. Hughes filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Houston on Aug. 2, reporting estimated liabilities of $1 billion-$10 billion and at least $774 million in fixed, liquidated, undisputed and unsecured debt. $SATS.X $ECHO
